Acne Scar Removal

While mild cases of acne rarely leave scars, there are many varieties of acne that can leave scars that are quite disfiguring. Some of these scars will go away in time but many of them are permanent. The most common type of acne scar is referred to as the ice-pick scar. This particular type of scar is recognizable for its distinctive scar pattern. They are commonly found on the face, shoulders, arms, and buttocks. The good news is that for ice-pick scars and the many other acne scars, there are several methods of scar removal that will vary greatly depending on the type, location, and severity of the scar.

Mild acne, typically doesn't leave scars, if for some reason it does, these scars typically heal in time. However, scars that are left by Nodulycystic acne may leave scars that are so deeply rooted in the tissue that they will never heal without serious intervention.

There are also pseudo-scars known as Macules that are really pigmentations that are scar related rather than scars themselves. This is the final stage of the healing process from inflamed acne lesions. While Macules may take some time to disappear all together they do not leave a trace behind them once they've vanished.

There are essentially two types of acne sars. The first type consists of increased skin tissue and the other of decreased skin tissue. The overgrowth of tissue is known as Keloid. The ice-pick scar is a common form of a keloid scar.

If you have an acne scar or many acne scars that are causing you emotional distress or that make you feel self-conscious about your appearance, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about scar removal and treatment options. You and your doctor should decide together whether you are a likely candidate for scar removal procedures and you should keep in mind that your overall health does play a role in the decision making process.

You should also note that your doctor is unlikely to provide scar removal treatment in the midst of an outbreak as this could lead to contamination. The first outbreak will result in the doctor moving your treatment date; if the outbreak persists he will probably prescribe medication for your condition and see you again when you are outbreak free.

You should also be aware that some acne scars simply can't be removed. While you cannot remove all traces of acne scars all the time, things can be done to minimize their appearance, which may be adequate to help restore self-esteem. And you never know. You could have a scar that no one thought was removable that simply vanishes or at least diminishes to the point that it is no longer noticeable.

Below are several common methods of scar removal:
1) Dermabrasion. This is the removal of the top layer of skin with the use of a special instrument. This process leaves the skin feeling very smooth after a brief period of reddening.
2) Punch grafts. In this method, small patches of skin are removed from another area of the body and implanted in the deep holes to diminish the pitting made by some acne scars.
3) Chemical peels. These are commonly used for less severe scarring. A chemical is applied to remove the top layer of skin. This allows the skin around the affected area to regenerate and repair itself.
4) Collagen injections. No, these aren't just for lips anymore. Collagen is injected beneath the scar in order to raise the skin.

There are other methods for treating acne scars such as laser treatment, steroid injections, and plastic surgery. You should discuss your options with your doctor and find the one that is best for your circumstances.
