Lavender is widely used for its calming and therapeutic scent. Its name comes from the Latin word lavare, which literally means 'to wash'. Centuries later, lavender is still added to bath water, baby lotions, laundry detergents, air fresheners, and candles. In addition to its wonderfully soothing scent, lavender also has excellent healing properties.

Its oil provides the scent of lavender and its therapeutic qualities have long been known to calm the senses. The scent serves to slow the reactions of the nervous system, which lulls the body into a more relaxed state of being. Lavender teas are excellent remedies for those who suffer from sleep disorders and lavender oils massaged into the skin are great as part of a skin treatment regiment. Skin and hair ailments are chief among the illnesses that are treated with lavender. Lavender is often used to treat hair loss by rubbing and massaging lavender oil into the scalp. In addition to hair loss, lavender has been used as an effective treatment for eczema, acne, and some fungal infections.

Lavender is a hale and hearty plant that can grow quickly and in many climates. You can also get lavender in the form of soaps, oils, lotions, infusions, extracts, and dried flowers. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor before using it as a treatment and ask for advisement before mixing it with other medications. If your doctor isn't certain about interaction possibilities be sure to talk to an herbalist who may have a better understanding to share with you.
